Midge turns five today. Five.
So cliché, but it truly feels like I just had her yesterday. I remember laying with her beside me – hours old – so tiny – but finally here.
She greeted me this morning with –
“Yes Al?”, I asked, as I got closer to the bed, in the dark – catching a glimpse of her with what little light was shining through the from the hallway…She lay there under the covers, huddled over on her tummy and knees.
“I’m five!” Up she sprang – hands above her head like she had just crossed the finish line and had won the gold medal.
She smiled from ear to ear. Her enthusiasm for the day, her day, was beyond contagious.
She proceeded to get ready, with extra care and energy, singing in the shower, her hair in a side pony, a brand new sparkly shirt on (a gift from her sister)…
The way a child embraces life and birthdays is something we should all try to remember. The feeling of excitement, as we enter a new phase in our lives. It’s hard to do.
Aging is scary… Life is scary.
But, not for Midge ~ at least not today.
Ahhhh – to be five……
