Last month an Indian sparrow built a nest in my apartment’s back side gallery, in between two drainage ducts. I tried my best by destroying small woods, hey grass and other materials brought by her at daily basis. But she proved me helpless by working hard all day. It is a problem in every summer either by pigeons or sparrows. They messed all the things of balcony with their shits and dry wood sticks andold furs and lot more.My neighbor advised me if I burn a nest beforehand and keep half burned nest as it is, sparrows will never come back again. I disliked the idea. And now sparrow is sharing my balcony without paying any taxes.
She laid three eggs in the nest. One of it some how dropped from the nest and destroyed. Two eggs turned in to broods after 12 days, and sounds of their chirping filled the balcony. Mother fed them from dawn to dusk by flying countless flights to and fro. One of the broods very eager for food fell from the nest, get injured and not survived aday. The third courageous one obeyed her mother’s advice and remained in the nest for his full term.
Today I found that new one, sitting on the broom placed near the water tap. She was a cute baby sparrow with light brown feathers. I don’t want to disturb her but she tried to enter in to the kitchen. I was afraid of her possible death by a running ceiling fan,so I closed the kitchen door. After some time I opened the door of the kitchen. She was sitting on the grill of balcony, watching the trees outside, and other birds twittering to gather. I went close to her and at that moment she had her first real flight. She flew to the nearest tree and sat on the branch with other sparrows. They welcomed her with chirping.
It reminds me of a day when I left my little daughter at the kindergarten school. That was her first flight to the outer world. That was a painful day for me, sending my little one to unknown. That pain turned in to immense joy afterwards. I hope that small sparrow will also have a full life with zest.
Nest in my balcony is empty now.No, I will not burn it.
