Two weeks had passed. Jennifer was still missing. Her words lingered in Larry's mind. "I'll leave you when I'm pregnant." It had sounded so ludicrous, she had to be joking. But the night after she found she was with child, she left. More of her words came back haunting him now. "You will be the father of the new queen. Our island will be forever grateful to you." Larry's mind reeled.
Jennifer had been the perfect wife for five years. Now in an instant she had vanished. Could what he thought was a joke be a reality he did not want to believe? He knew somehow that he had been a pawn in some scheme to build an empire. He just wasn't sure what kind of empire he might have spawned.
No letter, no phone call, nothing. What was really happening here? Jennifer had only called it an island. She had not spoken any name associated with it. Without this information it could be located anywhere on the planet. If he reported her missing to the authorities, they would lock him up for sure. He might never get out. Murder 1 would probably be the verdict.
No, he was on his own in his misery. Checking her things she left behind had done no good. Most of what she left behind was clothing. She had not been an extravagant wife. She had only one thing on her mind constantly. She wanted a child. "You're the perfect specimen," she had said.
Larry had sometimes felt like a lab rat. But he had passed it off as silly love talk. Now he could feel it in his gut. Jennifer had not been fooling around. She had meant every word she had said. He searched the deepest resources of his memory for more clues.
"She'll be cared for by many women, and she won't need a man for centuries." Larry pieced the puzzle together one sentence, one phrase at a time in his mind. "Where she will be no man will ever touch her until it is time." The words were coming but they had been spoken at such intervals during their relationship that he hardly thought anything of them as they seemed to fit into their normal conversations at the time.
"She'll make a fine huntress. You need not be worried, she will never hurt you." How did all this fit together? One thing was sure. The neighbors had been asking about Jennifer for a couple of days now. So far he had been able to convince them she had gone on vacation. But how long would they accept this diversion?
"Many will fall at her feet." The tone Jennifer had spoken that phrase in left Larry cold in his heart. The word fall seemed to be indicative of being slaughtered. He had passed it off as meaning she would be beautiful, but instinctively seemed to understand a deeper sinister meaning.
Jennifer herself was a stunning beauty. He had fallen for her immediately. Animal magnitism at its height. It was the mystery of her that ws intrigueing to him. But that was only the beginning of his mysterious relationship to this woman. Now he felt as if he was going to pay the price of his lack of self control towards her.
Suddenly the phone rang. "Jennifer?"
"You are the father of a baby girl."
"But you 've only been pregnant for two weeks!"
"I told you you were the perfect specimen. She is beautiful and will make an excellent huntress."
"But where are you?"
"That isn't important. Just be glad she will never hurt you. After all, you gave her life."
"She will begin her hunt within the month. We grow rather quickly."
"What are you talking about?"
"Why the next generation of vampires of course."
Larry felt his heart freeze as he dropped the phone.
