I am not sure why we've settled on Destin, Florida as the resort spot for a yearly vacation, but I can tell you that Destin was the place I took my first vacation. And I remember the photos. there I am, the cutest toddler in the world, running on the beach in my little red swimsuit. Apparently, my mother forogt to put sunscreen in some strategic area, and I likely owe my sagging skin in that one place to her (dammit, mom!). But here I am again, like a homing pigeon. Destin, Ft. Walton Beach, the Florida Panhandle, Central Time, USA.
This part of Florida doesn't feel like the Florida I spent time in with my grandparents. They lived in Naples, and it was sedated, with many more giant tricicyles going up and down the streets. More money, lusher surroundings. This part of Florida seems bare and slighlty poor and not as happy. It's been hit by hurricanes, and the economy, a one-two punch.
Many of the visitors come from Alabama (which we drove through last night) and Mississippi. I lived in Louisiana and Mississippi as a child, and maybe I'm like some kind of pigeon for these places, too. While there are things to not like about the South, I like the voices and the Ma'aming. I start to Ma'am when I'm down here. I talk to the waitress at the Waffle House the right way. "Yes, Ma'am."
I EAT at the Waffle House. Have you been to a Waffle House? It's a wild semi-fast food joint, where orders are screamed to the cook who makes things that involve a lot of American cheese. Okay, I like American cheese, though I only eat it at Waffle House. White bead toast. Sausage patties. Smotthered stuff. Everything is smothered.
My friend Kris and I will spend the day exercising, sitting on the beach, bobbing in the water, writing, and drinking "coco." That's what we call Pina Coladas. Listen, she drove, so we have a blender! I'm 46 years old, and Iam having my Spring Break vacation in summer! Ye-haw.
Okay, off to run on the sand! Then to Waffle House I go.
