Yes those tween kids can be a pain-in-the ass! They're stuck between childhood (wanting you to cut up apple slices for them and bring them a glass of vanilla milk) and true teenager-ness (their crazed desire for Justin Bieber, and texting until they need to wear a thumb brace). And although life with them can feel a little push-me/pull-me as they both reject you and need you, it doesn't have to always be that hard. Take them on a trip, but to someplace you BOTH can enjoy without any battle of the wills or desires.
The fabulous Gina Misiroglu of Red Room hooked me up with the very fun people at AOL so that I could give my recipe for a perfect family vacation with tweens. Of course, I recommend Santa Barbara, California, my hometown. But I promise, you'll love it as much as I, as long as you don't insist on holding your kids hostage in front of some engraved plaque and instead let them pluck crabs from tide pools and enjoy a couple hours in the skateboard park.
