I’m repulsed by the idea outlined in a recent New York Times article that Kindle e-books have so-called “popular highlights” in which the ‘quotable’ phrase is highlighted for you before you even read the book. As a writer, I want each reader to experience the work on their own terms and not be forced to sit up and take notice because someone else tells them to. I also want those little jeweled phrases to sneak up on someone, to surprise them. Thumbs down for superimposed highlights.
