Gentle Readers, I've made a decision. I'm dying my hair pink and traveling with the Sex Pistols.
If you've checked your calendar, you know that this is an April Fool's joke, although I think I would good with pink hair!
All kidding aside, I've never gotten April Fool's Day. Having a learning disability where it's hard at times to know when people are joking or serious, it's a day when people can make statements and I look at them thinking, are you serious? Then they break out in a smile and say "April Fools!" Ha, ha, very funny!
However there have been times when it feels like I've had April Fool Days in August or December. Sometimes I feel like I have to watch people super close to see if they are joking or not. Sometimes I've had a hard time knowing what's okay and not okay behavior.
When I was in London I was at the Imperial War Museum with my classmates, going through an exhibit about the Blitz. They shut the lights out and we hear d the slow sirens of an air raid. Out of nowhere, someone grabbed my hair! It was long back then so I jerked back, startled. I looked at him and I didn't know what to say. Should I yell at him? Or was he part of the exhibit? I couldn't figure it out. I didn't know what to do. I stared at him for a minute, and then I went outside in the hallway.
I had a drink of water when I saw my professor approach the person who grabbed my hair. It turned out he was in our program yet went to a different college. Two girls ran up to me and said: "Are you okay? That guy was such a jerk! Don't let him upset you." The odd thing was it didn't upset me, because I didn't know I was supposed to be upset. Instead, I felt comforted by the fact that my teacher said something to the boy and I had friends who were looking out for me.
Of course, I'm taking it all too seriously. It's just April Fool's, and to hold off any bad spirits, bunny bunny.
Here's Rufus Wainwright singing "April Fool's" Always remember you will believe in love, and all it's supposed to be, even on April 1st.
