Last week was a bit crazy for me on twitter, and not in a good way. Now you might be thinking "What could Jennifer do to make people not like her on twitter?" Oh man. You're about to find out.
The past couple of weeks haven't been good for Mitt Romney. With the leaked video of him at a fundraising dinner, then the famous airplane comment about opening windows. I don't hate Romney; he reminds me of that out of touch uncle who just doesn't get the fact homeless people can't get jobs. After all, there's plenty of places that need people! Okay, you want insurance and a decent wage! You have to start from the bottom!
Anyway, after 46percentgate, twitter was aflame with tweets defending Romney's remarks and blasting them. One of the defenders was a well known FOX anyalyst. I don't want to say her name (because I don't want more hate tweets) I'm calling her Donna Jacobs, from that famous West Wing episode when President Bartlet rips into a radio commetator for her anti-gay views plus she didn't even have the decency to stand when he walked in the room (For the record, when Vice President Bush came to visit my high school in 1988, I stood. I wore my Dukkakis button, but by God, I did stand for the Vice President of the United States)
Anyway, Donna Jacobs tweeted that Romney said the truth, and that in America "there are makers and takers." Meaning: makers are winners and they don't need the goverment for any darned thing! Takers are losers. If you take anything from the goverment, namely welfare, you are slug slime and awful. Any longtime readers of this blog know this made me see red. I have parents living on social security. My dad is a Korean veteran, stationed there when the war was ending and after it ended to make sure the peace treaty was upheld. When he had back surgery this summer, he got fantastic care from San Francisco's VA hospital. If you want to accuse him of being a "taker" fantastic. You go to Korea in 1953. You're nineteen years old. You go see a country devestated by war, yet he did his job. If you think he's a taker, then there's something wrong with your thinking.
My grandfather worked for the federal prison system for years. He ran a shop where prisoners learned a trade so when they got out, they could rely on something other than crime. He got a pension, and pensions are bad news these days. All those fat cats, living on those pensions! Again, I would like you to train prisoners a trade so they would have a job when they got out. I would like you to see how easy a job that was, how my grandmother told him once "If anything ever happens over there, don't be a hero. Just come home."
So maybe I wasn't thinking very clearly when I tweeted to Donna Jacobs: "I voted for Obama. I work, and I'm not a taker." Aha! Pretty good for one hundred and forty characters! I felt mighty pleased. Mighty mighty pleased!
And then the deluge came.
In one day, I was called twice a traitor to the US consitution. One person called me a "traiter" I'm terrible at spelling, but gee, even I can get traitor right. I thought what the heck? For what? A tweet? A damned tweet? Yeah, I'm a traitor. Oh wait, I voted for Obama! Yes, I voted for an African American Democrat who likes Etta James and danced with Ellen DeGeneres. What was with me, practicing my democratic right to vote! They should shave my hair like they did with Rosie when they accuded her of treason in Ryan's Daughter and drive me out of town. Wait, Lafayette is still pretty liberal. Drive me out of the country!
It proceeded to get worse. One person told me I should stop whining. She had on her twitter profile a big picture of Kool Aid. Below it it said "Don't Drink Me." If you want to tick me off, say "Don't drink the Kool-Aid" to me. It's like nails on a chalkboard. I was six when Jonestown happened. It's not a joke. I told the tweeter as much. I was then told to "put on my big panties"her picture had nothing to do with Jonestown. I thought about saying to her "You're a freaking maroon." But a insult joined by Bugs Bunny was too good for her. I tweeted back to her (and others) "You're blocked. Have a good day. Don't deal with bullies."
However, they kept at it even though they were blocked. Maybe it was a loophole, who knows. I was called a "whiny bitch" who got "owned." I was called a traitor, again. The whole thing made me dizzy. I was in middle school again. What the hell? Keep in mind Donna Jacobs never said anything to me; these people were her followers. They were nuts.
I'm not going to say I haven't sent off political tweets to people I disagreeed with; I'm surprised Elisabeth Hasslebeck hasn't blocked me yet. However, I keep it civil. I stick to the facts. This was just bizarre. I know I was lucky; there have been people who have been called "Commies" or the most idiotic, "Libtards." Wow, do you want a cookie for that one folks? Because that's pretty low.
My party is not blameless; we can give low blows as much as the next person. Many so called "liberals" got ugly when Michelle Duggar had her miscarriage last year. Where does it get you however? It makes you an ass. It makes you look obnoxious. And yeah, I can be an obnoxious ass as much as the next person. But you know what? You don't win your argument. You cheapen it. You look like a bully. You look like a person that no one wants to play with.
We have five weeks to go until the election. I'm going to try and not be a bully. Before you send off an angry rant to someone whose views oppose yours, I support your right to do so. But take a breath. Stick to the facts. Don't stoop to another person's level. And no matter what, when the President of the United States walks in a room, you better stand.
