I read "Two or Three Things I Know for Sure" years ago, and recently re-read it and recommended it to a friend of mine. It's a memoir, something I don't usually read, but I'd recommend it to anyone. Growing up a city girl, I'm forever fascinated by people who were raised in rural areas and their stories, going through hardships I couldn't even comprehend as a child.
I love the family photos and stories, horrifying though some of them may be, there is a simple beauty in the courage to tell them.
My favorite aspect of the book is how each section ends with "Two or three things I know for sure....." and each one has a statement that just touched my heart, "....and one of them is how you can both hate and love something you are not sure you understand," "....and one of them is that to go on living I have to tell stories, that stories are the one sure way I know to touch the heart and change the world." She certainly touched my heart and changed my world, and inspired me to have the courage to write.
Thank you, Dorothy Allison. You're a writer-warrior, and the world is a better place with authors like you.
