There are times when we think we'll sink from
the weight of our solitude
when the tumult of traffic
the cacophony of fire engines racing down
damp, dark streets poises like a stray
bullet over the drone of traffic
it is at that hour when, tucked neatly into
a goose down dream, I can finally hear myself think
that I give thanks for having a roof over my head,
and just enough heat to remind me how cold it is on the sidewalk
below, and how lucky I am not to have to sleep there.
I am thankful that when I open the refrigerator door, and peek inside, there is food.
How easy it is to forget what life is like without those simple basics.
Thanksgiving is a day we are reminded not only how fortunate we are,
but of those for whom a warm bed, and a hot meal are elusive wishes.

Your blog echoes my thoughts. Very well put, thanks!
Thank You
Many thanks for your comment, Mary!
Lucky you to be in Ireland now. One of these days, I hope to get there.
Nora Barnacle
Jayne, you should try to make it to Ireland and definitely visit Nora Barnacle's home right here in Galway!
Nora
ohmygawd!!!! Thanks, Mary. You are uncanny. I'm in development on a feature-length screenplay in which Nora is one of the major characters. Stay tuned for a coming post which will describe what's going on.
Nora
Jayne, that IS amazing. Good luck with it. Have you seen the film on Nora (I think) saw it years ago in an art film house in SFran. starring Fionnuala Flanagan, a friend of a friend of mine here in Galway, Rod Stoneman, he makes movies! Mary P.
Nora
Hi Mary,
Just saw this comment about the movie "Nora." Is Rod Stoneman the gent who made that film?
Mine is actually quite different----my take on Nora, that is. Also, the focus is on the censorship of "Ulysses," and Sylvia Beach's struggle to publish it.
Did you live in San Francisco? That's where I am now. I'll bet you're glad to be back in Ireland. I'll bet Galway is lovely.
Nora
Hi Jayne, Rod runs the Heuston School of Film here in Galway, named after John. I don't think he had anything to do with that film on Nora but if you google him you will see how prolific he is! Yes, I lived in Kensington, near Berkeley, my husband was going to school there. I am returning soon for a visit. I must say I do love Galway (despite the weather at times) although it took us about five years before we settled, Will is from California, born in SLO and his mom lives in Monterey. I know the area quite well! My three boys love going back there as they were all born in the US, two in New Mexico and one in Baltimore. End of bio! Good luck with your film, sounds really interesting, hope it makes it across the water to good old Eire! Mary
btw
The post I was telling you about that deals with Nora Barnacle is now up on Red Room Web site, or if it's down by the time you get this, check my blog. It's called: "Not Just A Passing Ghost" and is about my conversation with Stephen Joyce.
