I kind of obsess about which email to use because I check it and send it so frequently. I tend to switch between gmail, yahoo mail, and the new Mac MobileMe.
Gmail seems to be used by the more “trendy” crowd. The number of users is much smaller than yahoo mail. Gmail groups replies into something called conversations. No matter how many times someone replies, they are all grouped together nice and neat. This is a good thing because many times someone will reply to an email that you have sent, but you have no idea to what they are replying. This grouping by gmail is very clever and useful.
Another feature of gmail is using labels rather than folders. I like the idea of labels because one email can be tagged with multiple labels, rather than sticking it one folder.
Gmail has an outstanding search system, similar to that of its search engine. In many cases I have been able to go back and do a search and find a password or username in an old email and it has saved me a ton of time!
If you are a chatter, gchat is quite good these days. You can login to AIM and chat with your buddies right there in gmail without having to open another window.
Yahoo mail has an interface similar to that of Outlook Express, which is nice for those of us that do not like change. It has drag and drop features which is something that gmail lacks.
With yahoo messenger, you cannot access your AIM contacts, so that is not useful at all for me.
Where Yahoo mail does win out is in the way it handles your contacts. It beats gmail hands down. It is a very powerful address book.
I am a mac fanatic. In fact in our home we have an i-Mac, a Macbook Pro, and a Macbook. Three macs for two people. Can’t complain there! The old version of .mac was a waste in my opinion. It was very akward.
But the new MobileMe mimics very much the experience of using your mac, even when forced to use a PC. It brings the best of the Mail program, your Address Book, and your iCal. And the best thing is that it syncs great with your mac and your iphone.
My major problem is the fact that when I am at work and using a PC, my MobileMe mail through the web interface does not allow me to send HTML messages. So if I receive an email sent in HTML format, I cannot forward it to a friend because it just comes out all jumbled in a text only format.
Conclusion: I am basically using gmail full time. I have it set up so that I can send mail using my mac address through gmail interface.
What do you guys find works best for you?
