I live in a community where kids get firearms from Santa. Their parents take them out of school to go on hunting trips. I accept this as a part of life and something over which I have no influence, let alone control.
I was unnerved, though, by the reaction of many to the arrest of the 16 year-old who brought several guns and a significant amount of ammunition to school. Here are some of their comments:
"It was blown WAY out of proportion."
"It's not like he brought them into school. They were in his truck and it was locked."
"So he was having mood swings. What teenaged boy doesn't?"
"My wife never goes anywhere without a loaded pistol in her purse. You live alone. If anyone needs a gun, it's you. I'll tell you where to go to get one."
"We don't make people get licenses to own knives. Guns are no different."
"If we didn't have so many stupid laws and rules, kids wouldn't feel the need to rebel."
