In this fifth edition of Play at the Center of the Curriculum, we reaffirm our commitment to play in the early childhood classroom. The natural link between play and development is becoming increasingly widely recognized. This is an important time and opportunity for changing the way we educate young children. And early childhood is an important time in the lives of our future citizens. The stakes are enormous.
This fifth edition features a new chapter, “Outdoor Play,” by Jane P. Perry, widely recognized for her work on children’s play, including the key role of outdoor environments and intentional teacher practices. This chapter highlights insightful anecdotes from the author’s research and practice regarding the importance of physically active play, child-initiated play and inquiry, and children’s connections with the natural environment.
