I grew up in Roswell, New Mexico-more accurately on a farm about 10 miles south of town. My mother was a true believer in the Roswell Incident, so I spent a lot of my childhood chasing after bright lights and taking pictures of things in the night sky that my mother was sure were UFOs. While I've lived in California for most of my life now, my experiences in New Mexico fuel my imagination and inspire a lot of my writing.
For the past 25 years I've been teaching writing at UC Berkeley, where I am also the recipient of a Distinguished Teaching Award that I'm very proud of. I am also the recipient of a Derringer Award form the Short Mystery Fiction Society, and many moons ago when I was an undergraduate at the University of New Mexico, I was awarded an Academy of American Poets prize. I've been nominated for a couple of Pushcart Prizes in both fiction and nonfiction. I am a member of The Authors Guild.
