I am a recently retired children’s book publisher and editor/translator, from Montreal, Quebec, residing in Madison, WI. I currently volunteer at a hospice and have listened to many unadorned stories that beg to be chronicled, recognized, somehow honoured before they are extinguished forever. I am thinking words at the end of a life may be among the purest expressions uttered. To seize the meaning of these moments in time, however elusive, is for this writer like a levy one longs to accept.
Children's books is what I did for almost 30 years--nurturing, cajoling, and helping to shape the author's story and the illustrator's vision into a finished book for little and not so little hands was for me a calling that I couldn't let go. And then I did. Now when I head to the book store the only section I enter is labeled Literature/Fiction and time stops for this is where I want to be. I'm home, so to speak. My former boss when I was apprenticing in the children's book industry back in the '70s once said to me with a dispirited groan: "Does the world really need another book?' This when her own prodigious publishing output left me breathless and sleepless as her only editorial assistant. Like my boss, Red Room brings me back to the sheer command the written word exerts over my life.
The creative energy Red Room exudes is remarkable. Thanks for all you do for both published and unpublished authors!
Interests include reading, travel and following my son's Indie band Boneyard.
