The sound reflects the sunlight so strongly I have to turn away to protect my eyes. We look for shade under a cluster of tall cedar trees, the ground is cool to the touch and slightly damp. We sit in the shade and look onto the sound: Michelangelo's clouds painted into the blue sky and sailboats moving through water colored like a mirror. His hand in mine, his head on my shoulder. I turn to my dog who is seated in front of us, he smiles with his whole face. He is love. Other people, some with smiling dogs of their own, pause in their journeys to sit on the soft earth and absorb all they survey. A collective happiness. If you keep still, you can feel it all around.
