Last night in the wee small hours, nothing unusual here, awake again. This time is was distinctly my name being whispered. I look around the room to see faces hiding in the curtains, I smile. As much as being annoyed it is the wee small hours, the faces trying to be serious in the curtains are funny as well. They have concealed themselves in the purple and blue hues of the curtains but the giggles are unmistakeable. I stare and smother laughter as the eyes shift as they try and work out whether I have seen them. I send out laughter in my mind and the eyes, four sets of them, sparkle in delight as the faces momentarily appear brightly with smiling, dimpled cheeks, baby faces chubby with baby fat, and wide mouth, gleeful, laughter. Almost as one, they turn as if called and wave at me and then wheeee gone.
Some days when this happens I wonder if my brain is here or gone. Still I live in a world where I expect the unexpected, spirit children playing in my curtains is a breeze and a welcome laugh! I smother laughter, and decide to get up and get a drink of water, what the heck, I'm awake anyway. I slip from the bed, pat the dog, whisper "stay" and make my way down the hall in darkness.
Only? I get the distinct impression something is following me. I swing around and look, there over in the corner is a small orb, brilliant as a sun, wandering behind me the size of a golf ball, about 30 centimetres off the ground, weaving down the hallway after me. It stops, as if it sees I see it. I turn and continue down the hallway, watching back over my shoulder to see what happens. The orb continues after me, same size, same height weaving down the hallway.
I come to the kitchen and slip around the corner, peering back down the hallway, still the orb follows, weaving slowly, same height off the ground. I move through the darkness and hide in the kitchen, crouching down like a loon, and peering around the counter. The orb, slids under the table, under the chairs and weaves directly towards me. I smother laughter, it's definitely following me! I move into the kitchen and stand in the middle. The orb closes in on me and winds around and around me, I smother laughter again as the Movie Theme from "Jaws" slips into my mind. Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun... (I do wonder if I have lost it completely at this stage).
The orb illuminates brightly transforms and changes, I watch with absolute delight to see the "orb" transform into one of my beloved cats! "Rascal" appears and winds lovingly around my legs, purring like a high speed motorboat. She looks so beautiful, shining in the darkness, no limping or pain. (She had bone cancer and had to be put down). I lean over her speaking to her quietly, she responds as she always did with what my No.1 son calls "a Wheelie", back feet on the ground and a smooge up my shin. There is nothing so beautiful as these wonderful animals that come to visit in their wonderful amazing love of us. She winds around my legs and looks at me intently as if to say "Haven't noticed me for a bit huh?' I laugh.
I hear the dog coming down the hallway and "Rascal", while patient, has no time for him. In a flash, gone back to a small orb that slowly fades as the dog pads out in the kitchen. I am half pie frustrated that the dog has come, but decide I am blessed for the visit anyway. I get the drink I was after and shaking my head, head with the dog back to bed. Maybe these wake up calls in the middle of the night are worth it you know. We miss a lot while asleep!!
