Today was interesting. I read everyday for people, connecting loved ones and giving spiritual guidance. It's my job, a world away from my old life but I love it. People are intriguing, full of knowledge that they have forgotten and it is hidden around them and within them.
Today was interesting though. The client I had wanted to be me. She openly said it and then compounded it by adding I WILL be better than you. I laughed out loud with delight. "Excellent" I said, "I appreciate your honesty, however should you just consider one thing?" "Yes?" she said, and this is when Hong, my gorgeous philosophical guide came to the fore stood beside me and winked at me. I introduced Hong to her and told her, he would answer her question.
He said "If you were presented with a bowl of apples, would you consider that each apple has the same qualities, the same flavour, the same shape? Would this apple be exactly the same as all the other apples in the bowl? The same consistency, colour, size and texture?"
"Well" She said "It's really just an apple at the end of the day, what is the point?"
Hong replied "If an apple is only an apple, no different from it's neighbour, than how do you truly choose the apple you want to eat? Most people will peruse the bowl, choose the shine, the shape, the colour and then choose the apple". In my mind, I am laughing because I can see exactly where Hong is going with this analogy. My poor client on the other hand is looking truly confused on the couch.
He continued "If the apple were not an apple but a person, would you see that the choice is not in what the person is, but the qualities of that person, their uniqueness that draws others towards them. You want to be like this one, this person in front of you but in reality you are the apple next to her in the bowl. You simply cannot be this apple, this apple is already complete, shining and ready to be chosen by those around her."
My clients face still showed concern at what Hong was explaining. I thought I would help her out but Hong motioned me to be quiet still. I sighed and waited for him to continue. I love Hong but sometimes, unless you are talking to someone of interpretive understanding, they don't get it.
"You, as an apple in the bowl of life, are comparing yourself to another apple" Yep, that should have nailed it. I watched my client as the words sank in. "Why do you want to be like this one, when in reality you are a complete unique being with your own gift, knowledge and understanding? If you want to shine in the bowl of life, you must truly be you so that you draw others to you, your knowledge, your passion. You cannot compare because you cannot be like this one, you are your own person in your own right, shine as you not as a comparison to another"
I quietly said to her "Do you understand?" She nodded, "I think so, however if I don't compare I can't aspire to be the best" I laughed again, "Who are you being the best for? You should be the best for you. To compare will set you up for a fall, trust me. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt! You must develop for you, it's your gift"
Hopefully, she left with some understanding. You have to be you, it's as simple, yet as logical as that! Shine and you will be a lovely apple in the bowl of life.
