Republican strategists figure if we can just lay off enough schoolteachers, firemen, librarians and safety inspectors, the economy will come roaring back. Also, instead of relying on Medicare, seniors should just go out and make their own deals with insurance companies and it will still be called Medicare so everything will be fine. And who needs consumer protection from banks? Banks are great just the way they are. As for climate change, what do scientists know about anything? In two special House elections yesterday in New York City and Nevada, voters agreed.
Holy crap. How can anybody fall for this obvious malarkey? The answer is, you have to get voters so desperate that they'll try anything. And they need something to believe in. So they try to believe in know-it-alls who are out to dig our grave and shove us in. It’s like trying to grow more hair on your head by striking it with a hammer.
Some of these politicians actually believe what they preach. These are the idiots. Michelle Bachmann, for example. Others know it’s a bunch of crap but just want to please their contributors who care first about paying no tax and second about putting the fix in so they can get favorable government contracts. These are the lying pricks. Mitch McConnell, for example. He's not afraid to show you that he's proud of his lies even while he tells them. Why not? Idiots believe him and other lying pricks respect him for his mastery. McConnell treats decency and fair play like a blanket crawling with herpes. If he makes eight remarks, seven were lies and the eighth was a guess. Then he gets a good night's sleep. He understands his economic positions make no sense for 98 percent of the people. He’s also the guy who said his Number One priority is to defeat Obama in 2012. Not to do anything particularly good for America, mind you, just to sweep away his enemy. Because these people don’t have opponents. They have enemies. The lying pricks make good use of the idiots, but sometimes they have to back up and give them some measure of control.
It’s not always easy to sort out the idiots from the lying pricks, but as jobs evaporate and more and more people sit around with nothing to do but stare at their overdue bills, sorting out idiots from lying pricks is a decent way to pass the time. I recommend it. Of course some of these people are idiots and lying pricks. Rick Perry comes to mind.
This coalition of wackos and psychopaths is doing a heck of a job sabotaging the economy and getting everyone to blame Obama. He made it possible for them to do this because after he swept into office in 2008 with control over both houses of Congress he tried to make nice to people like McConnell. So his stimulus bill, for example, was one-third tax cuts under a tax system rigged for the moneyed elite. That meant the stimulus was watered down and doomed to fail, given the size of the problem. And now that stimulus money is running out and states and local governments are laying off workers, Obama gets blamed. Unfortunately he deserves some of the blame. Meanwhile he also gets blamed for the TARP bailout to banks, which of course was organized and started under Bush Junior. The economy is so bad hardly anyone (except military families) notices that America's wars of vague purpose grind on without end.
At least after two and a half years in office Obama figured out he should be talking about jobs instead of what the people who hate him want to talk about. It’s a start, but a very late start. These are the kinds of leaders we get, Democrats and Republicans, when we allow them to construct a political system based on politicians returning favors to people who give them money, which in the rest of the world is called bribery.
