Here we go again. Congressional Republians are preparing to rain airplane parts on babies. What's behind this selfless stance of theirs? Well, the FAA is set to shut down again thanks to a Republican union-killing provision that Democrats won’t vote for. So the Republicans are threatening to cripple government supervision of the skies if they don’t get their way.
Sound familiar? What they want is to write into the law a measure that says whenever unions seek to organize any part of the transportation industry, qualified voters who fail to vote will be counted as voting “no” on union. That’s an awfully stiff test. Compare it to the reality that that even in presidential election years only about half of the electorate registers and votes.
Delta Airlines, the only large air carrier that’s not unionized, has paid off Republicans so they’ll stick to their guns on this terribly undemocratic provision. It could also be used later to kill unions in companies that are already organized. In fact, if you think about it, it’s like a president deciding that when he runs for re-election, any vote that’s not cast will be considered a vote for the status quo, meaning that president’s re-election. Not hard to imagine. Heck, why not vote in a monarchy while we’re at it? Or rule by God -- that is, rule by the God envisioned by church crazies who think God wants us to get rich and walk over the starving, diseased bodies of the unfortunate without giving them so much as a glance. Incidentally, that would make libertarian Ron Paul one of the happiest guys on the planet. I’m tired of uninformed TV personalities portraying him as a sweet old man. He ain’t.
Meanwhile, here we are again with Republicans holding a gun to our collective head and saying: Give us what we want or eventually a closed FAA will weaken air safety and start raining broken airplane parts down on your babies. And it will be your own fault.
It’s wearisome dealing with people like this day after day, single-minded zombies who deal in slogans and fabrications and refuse to learn all the things they don’t know, which is a lot. We need a better-educated America. Too bad the you-know-whos are quickly closing off that possibility with their death-dealing budgets. That means when the male and female 24-hour “news” drama queens read teleprompters about what’s at stake with the FAA situation or any other situation that's more complex than reality TV they’ll leave out the most important parts. Why? Because the people writing the scripts for them either won’t understand or won’t want viewers to understand what’s really going on.
