Will the five giggling justices on the Supreme Court please stop telling broccoli jokes and go ahead and do what they’d decided to do to the Affordable Health Care Act long before they checked a single statute? Their jokes are killing people. Really.
They tell us that anyone in America can get medical care anyway, but I rather doubt they’re dumb enough to believe this. An emergency room might stitch you up if you fell off a roof while spreading tar at a no-benefits job. But it won’t do much for you if you show up with the first signs of multiple sclerosis. The real test of what’s going on is down there on the ground where emergency medicine and corporate insurers leave people to suffer and die. That's how we got ranked 37 by the World Health Organization, a bit north of Indonesia.
The Obama Democrats got suckered again. First they backed off from the single payer system in favor of the complex, schemey web that “moderates” demanded, and now they will no doubt lose the whole package because they went along with the compromise. These tea-party players may be nuts, but they play a much better game of poker than the squeamish Dems, who ought to have seen this bluff coming three years ago. Of course the Roberts court won’t let us into the 21st century with the rest of the civilized world. These guys are still smarting over the few shards of the New Deal still on the books.
And to top it all off the poor solicitor general who’s supposed to be arguing the case for the people gets stage fright and stammers all over himself. Good thing they didn’t allow cameras. They might have picked up a pee stain on his trousers. Anyway, we ended up with what innocent defendants usually get -- a third-rate public defender. And he’s utterly paralyzed when the prosecution won’t plea bargain. You’d think a former law professor of a president would at least get us a decent attorney to lose with.
None of these jokes we’re hearing from the Republican side of the bench will fix the chronic, long-term conditions of victims this sorry-ass court just can’t wait to abandon. It doesn’t seem to make any difference who’s elected anymore. When the right-wingers are in office they take what they want. When they’re out of office they sucker their opponents into giving it to them anyway. Instead of health care and a working educational system we get Star Wars and Afghanistan.
Pass the broccoli.
