Ileana Araguti is the author of SHATTERED PARADISE: Memoirs of a Nicaraguan War Child. She is also an educator and resides in Southern California.
A Nicaraguan native, as early as six years old, Araguti witnessed the effects of war first hand. And by the age of 12, she witnessed an event that would forever change her life. Araguti is one of the first Nicaraguan authors to tell the story of a revolutionary war from a child’s perspective.
Araguti’s account tells a gripping story of a country once rich with natural resources and the enormous loss of its people. Araguti not only survived the war and the many heart breaks that came with it, but wrote a memoir to inspire others into the belief that every one comes to life with a given destiny and that if you never give up, life can turn out to be a beautiful journey.
“I learned to forgive and appreciate what truly matters in life: family, life and good friendships. You must focus on the positive, no matter what happens. Hope should be the last thing one should ever lose.”
With time, she overcame posttraumatic stress disorder and refocused her energy in becoming an inspiration to others. She became an educator despite her childhood experience with bullying schoolmasters and against all odds as a U.S. immigrant. Her inspiration came when she realized that she could make a positive difference in the life of others.
“I’ve learned that in this life there is good and bad, but in order to succeed and truly live life, you must focus on what matters—the positive.”
