Ilana is a longtime journalist currently working on two novels. She spent 20 years at the San Francisco Chronicle and Sacramento Bee, covering beats that ranged from politics to workplace and small business. She is author of a nonfiction book, "Where Girls Come First: The Rise, Fall and Surprising Revival of Girls' Schools," published by Tarcher/Penguin in 2004. She blogs at Midlife Bat Mitzvah.

Ilana is a co-founder and board chair of the Julia Morgan School for Girls, an all-girl middle school in Oakland, Calif. that opened in 1999 and today serves 183 girls in grades six through eight.

She is currently studying to become a Bat Mitzvah and writing a blog about it at midlifebatmitzvah.wordpress.com.
