I wouldn't have been interested in writing if I hadn't been a reader first, and I wouldn't have joined the Red Room Team if I hadn't been interested in the authors behind the books. I used to get tongue-tied when I'd meet my literary heroes. Now, because of my job, I get to interact with hundreds of great writers every week, including many authors whose work I've enjoyed for years. (And, yes, the occasional review copies I get in the mail are a nice perk.)
Red Room's fantastic new Authors' Bookstore is perfect for readers like me. When I order books from other online retailers (even independent ones I love and have to visit whenever I’m in Portland), all I get is the book. On Red Room, I get the book just as quickly, but I can do so much more. Red Room authors spend time on the site, blogging, commenting, and sharing what’s going on in their lives, including the inside scoop on their next projects. Then, when I order a book from them, I get a personalized thank-you note and they get an extra 15% of the cover price—no other retailer does that. Then, I’ll be connected to them through Red Room’s social media feature (called, amusingly enough, “Connections”) and will get email blasts from them about stuff I actually want to know about. Of course, you can opt out of that—if you’re buying your ex-boyfriend’s book and don’t want him to have the satisfaction of knowing you did, you can make sure he’ll never know.
This sounds like a sales pitch for my fellow readers to choose Red Room to buy their books, and it is. However, since I had a hand in developing it, I know that every aspect of the bookstore is designed specifically to help readers connect with their favorite authors and buy their books, and help authors make more money. I love it!!
