I met Tamim Ansary, the author of West of Kabul, East of New York, at Regent Thai restaurant in San Francisco on November 26, 2013, to be interviewed for Red Room. I felt an immediate connection with Tamim because he grew up in a country which was similar to mine – the absence of modern conveniences such as paved roads, cars, flush toilets, high rise buildings…, the country invaded by Russia like Korea annexed by Japan. Also Tamim came to America in his teens and became an American like I did. He asked me questions about my book, Shattered by the Wars, the story of my family during WWII under Japan and during the Korean War, as if he himself lived through it. I returned home feeling good having been interviewed by the author of a best-selling novel and dreaming that my story would be well received by the public.
His interview—arranged by Red Room's Author Matchmakers—appears on my Red Room News & Events page: http://redroom.com/member/hi-dong-chai/news-events.
