During the first week of November, I felt like the month of writing was going to be smooth sailing. 50,000 words in 30 days seemed like a simple concept and I managed nearly 2,700 each day for 7 days straight. No problem! NaNoWriMo was going to be a breeze.
I had a couple of days where I just couldn't stay up to write because I had exhausted myself during the day and that dropped my average word count. No biggie, I was still ahead of the game.
Then I contracted a writing and illustration job and had to take a five day break from my story. Freelance work equals paycheck. Everything was still okay, I just had to pick up the pace once I finished that project.
The Thanksgiving Holiday... my mother and my husband's sister both came to stay with us for a few days (7 and 3 days, respectively). I've been buzzing around this house for a week trying to get it presentable and ready for guests. They're both still staying until Monday, Dec 1st, so I couldn't just wait to write until they left. It was do or die time. I've been sleeping on the sofa, setting my phone alarm to quietly go off at 5 am so I could wake up and write while the house was still quiet. Finishing NaNo has kicked my butt!
Now, just because I have 50,000+ words doesn't mean I'm done. The story isn't completed yet and I need to fill in a few blanks here and there. It's actually my best work to date and I'm feeling very confident about this one. I guess we'll see what happens in the next month or so. I'm giving myself until New Years Eve ('08) to clean it up and then I want to submit it!
For tonight though, I'm going to work until I get sleepy and then I'm going to turn off my bloody phone and sleep in tomorrow morning (at least until my guests get up and stumble into the living room, wondering why I'm not up typing).
Cheers to all my fellow NaNoWriMo winners!
