As a huge fan of Wagner AND Folklore I was excited to get this book hoping that it would be a fun and new perspective on both topics. Mr. Quense follows the folklore that Wagner built off of and adds to it while not detracting from the essence of it all. If you are a Wagnerite you will like this book. If you are not familiar with Wagner's epic 15 hour opera series, Der Ring des Nibelungen, this book is a perfect introduction to it.
Mr. Quense uses poetic license to the story but in such a way that it still follows the original and adds to the story too. My personal favorite nuance was that Wotan was planning out the music that Wagner would be writing some 1500 years in the future and went so far as to even name some of the sections. The humor used in this book reminded me of Lampoon's parody of "Lord of the Rings" called "Bored of the Rings" and was very effective and humorous. I highly suggest this book as an addition to any collection. ( )
