Poetry reading: Celebration of Philip Whalen: The Beat Tradition at Reed College A celebration of the release of The Collected Poems of Philip Whalen (Wesleyan Press, 2007)—with an introduction by Reed English professor Pancho Savery and an overview by special collections librarian Gay Walker ’69—will include readings of Whalen's poetry by prominent poets. Philip Whalen ’51 received a B.A. from Reed in general literature. He roomed with Gary Snyder ’51 and Lew Welch ’50, and credited professor Lloyd Reynolds with changing the course of his writing and his life. He later moved with Snyder to San Francisco, where he met Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Philip Lamantia, and Michael McClure, and was present for the "Six Poets at the Six Gallery" poetry reading in 1955 that launched the San Francisco poetry renaissance. 7:30 p.m., Eliot Hall chapel.
