Imperial Masquerade: The Legend of Princess Der Ling traces not only the life of Princess Der Ling, in all its various transformations, but offers a fresh look at the woman she lionized and, ultimately, betrayed – the Empress Dowager Cixi.

Join author Grant Hayter-Menzies, as he presents photographs - some never before seen - taken by Der Ling's talented photographer brother, Xunling, and now in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

A former art and music critic, Grant Hayter-Menzies spent six years researching Imperial Masquerade: The Legend of Princess Der Ling. He recently published the first biographies of stage and screen star Charlotte Greenwood and Wizard of Oz icon Billie Burke, and is currently working on a book about the extraordinary friendship of American diplomat’s wife, Sarah Pike Conger, and the Empress Dowager Cixi, before, during and after the 1900 Boxer Uprising in Beijing. He lives in Sidney, British Columbia.

This talk will be conducted in English.
