Grant Hayter-Menzies is the author of "Imperial Masquerade: The Legend of Princess Der Ling", "The Empress and Mrs. Conger: The Uncommon Friendship of Two Women and Two Worlds", both published by Hong Kong University Press, and the first biographies of stage and screen comediennes Charlotte Greenwood and "Wizard of Oz" icon Billie Burke. His newest book, to be published in fall 2013 by McGill-Queen's University Press, is "Shadow Woman: The Extraordinary Career of Pauline Benton." This book deals with the life and legacy of Benton, the American-born founder of The Red Gate Shadow Players and before 1949 the only female master of Chinese shadow theatre in the world.
Grant's newest project is a biography of Lillian Carter, the irrepressible and compassionate mother of President Jimmy Carter.
