San Francisco PI Veronica "Ronnie" Ventana (Murder on the Run) happens to be present at Match Margolis's musical comeback when somebody murders the talented jazz saxophonist. After years on a drugged decline, Match was poised for better things, with new backup and new compositions. Suspects include an alienated daughter, four "friendly" moneylenders, and several disgruntled musicians. Match's rather scruffy wife asks Ronnie's assistance-though Detective Philly Post warns her away from the case. With a little help from fellow PI Blackie, Ronnie prevails. The smooth prose, attractive protagonist, and familiar big-city surrounds will appeal to aficionados of hard-boiled mysteries with tough female detectives.
