Rick Mullin's book length poem Huncke
Rick Mullin is a New Jersey poet with a new book just published: the book length epic Huncke. Among the Beats, Herbert Huncke is a minor but legendary figure: a hobo, junkie, petty thief, 42nd street denizen, and object of professional interest for William Burroughs (who portrayed him in Junkie), Jack Kerouac (in Desolation Angels), and Allen Ginsberg (he is the "angel headed hipster" in Howl). Mullin's poem links some of the particulars of Huncke's street life with a panoramic vision of American history, all written in ottava rima...a challenging rhyme and metrical structure most famously deployed by Byron in Don Juan.
