I am editor/partner of GREENE Magazine, celebrating a greener gardening lifestyle in the Ozarks. We just completed our first year. For the past four decades, I have been a newspaper reporter, editor and editorial page editor. In 1994, I left the Springfield News-Leader to serve as president/CEO of Ozarks Public Television. GREENE Magazine is a dream come true. We will expanded from five to six issues in 2012. I have worked as a media relations advisor and consultant, have edited one novel; continue to work on my own while I enjoy learning new skills appropriate for the 21st Century.
I'm a fifth-generation Kansan, 1970 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Journalism; and am proud to have attended Allen County Community College in my native Iola. I was the first recipient of the ACCC Alumni Award and honorary degrees in 1990. I have served four communities as a newspaper editor (Topeka and Coffeyville, Kan.; Marietta, Ohio; and Springfield, Mo.).
I have been married to Nancy Cravens Freeman, a remarkable and talented historian, educator and writer who now works as an adjunct lecturer at Ozarks Technical College in Springfield. We are parents and grandparents.
