To finish up this historic week, let’s take one more look at Proposition 8 in California. Again, voters approved the initiative, which adds to the state constitution the following sentence: “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
In what strikes us as a timely release, G. Carlos Smith, a corporate partner in Skadden Arps’s Palo Alto office, has a romance novel coming out, entitled “A Matter of Choice.” According to a synopsis, the novel “explores the lives of two young men as they find their way during unforgiving but changing times. In a moving but delightful love story, the novel considers the tragic effects of laws like Proposition 8 while offering a new hope.”
Smith married his partner in September, pre-Proposition 8. Now, of course, the legal validity of that marriage lies in limbo. Today, we spoke to Smith about Prop 8, what it’s like to be gay during a time when gay rights are constantly in flux, and the professional handicap of homosexuality.
Here's the link; the commentary is certainly colorful!
