At a recent San Francisco fundraiser for Narrative Magazine, Tobias Wolff, sharing the podium with Amy Tan, spoke of tempered author-envy over the lines around the block for Amy's book-signing events. "You have to love someone a lot not to want to kill her when the waiting line stretches all the way around the block," he laughed. And the audience, writers all (or so it seemed), laughed with him. It's fascinating to be in a room full of people you recognize perhaps not by name but by MFA programs, writers workshops or book jacket photos, all applauding speakers and hosts (Carol Edgarian and Tom Jenks) they admire and trying not to be envious of the imaginary lines around the block. As one who has enjoyed tiny successes of book-signing lines as well as readings to an audience of two, my personal author-envy disappeared with Wolff's hilarious reading from new short story collection
