What Could Have Been
Blog Post by Evelyn Sharenov - Aug.13.2010 - 1:29 pm
Hybrid Mom has published another personal essay of mine - 'What Could Have Been' - a memoir from the early days of legalized abortion in the United States. 800 words helps to hone and guide my essay. What I leave out: my mother told me that my grandmother had thirteen 'procedures', decades before abortion was safe and legal. My grandmother took my mother and my aunt for a jaunt to NYC, to a nice lady doctor. The doctor showed my grandmother Rose how to make a tampon-like plug to prevent pregnancy; my grandfather found it, pulled it out and beat up my grandmother.
