Harold, a dingo mix, came home with me from the Oregon Humane Society, a wonderful organization that performs rescue operations all over the world. I missed presence of a dog in the house - especially when I write. They keep me grounded, keep me from the isolation -and sometimes desolation - of the creative life, the work part, where what's been swimming in your head now gets put down in words.
Whe Elsa died last summer, she left a dog-sized hole in my heart and in my life. She has not been replaced. Instead, Harold has come here to get to know her ghost in the house and to provide me with balls, socks, squeaky chewy toys, to ask for treats and scratches, to lick my toes and take care of me. And when I have to be serious, he stretches out on the floor by my feet so I can put the words down. He's a genius at empathy and making me laugh.
