Eve Kushner's Biography

Member Info

Jan 2008

Eve Kushner is a writer in Berkeley, California. In February 2009, Stone Bridge Press published her second book, Crazy for Kanji: A Student's Guide to the Wonderful World of Japanese Characters. Eve's first book, Experiencing Abortion: A Weaving of Women's Words, came out in 1997 from Harrington Park Press (which Taylor and Francis has since acquired). Ten years later, Experiencing Abortion received a mention in Newsweek, and then in 2010 it landed her on "Saturday Night at the Movies," (http://www.tvo.org/TVO/WebObjects/TVO.woa?videoid%3F654099689001) a program by the Canadian public television station TVO!

Current Focus

Eve is now focusing exclusively on an exciting new project called Joy o' Kanji. She intends to write one essay about each of the 2,136 Joyo kanji, the characters needed for daily use in Japan. For a very low price, readers can download these essays in PDF format. The essays feature wonderful photos of kanji.

Eve used to specialize in writing profiles that captured the fascinating complexities of people's minds. Joy o' Kanji essays similarly examine the complicated "personalities" of each kanji. After all, kanji are every bit as complex and inconsistent as humans! Eve wrestles with the contradictions inherent in each kanji, revealing the character of that character!

Joy o' Kanji is now open for business!

Because Joy o' Kanji is all-consuming, Eve is not accepting any new freelance work
