This story was inspired by my time in the Badlands of South Dakota and in the west in general, where nothing is ever quite as it seems. One could say that about any place on earth, I think, but it was in the west that I realized how true it is. This is, in the end, a story about finding one's place in the world. In any world, including the very one in which you live.
