I am going to direct my comments to those who are followers of Jesus Christ; if you aren't, you are free to glean any scraps that fall from the table, but you are certainly under no obligation.
I have never been a "Neo Con." At the risk of being labeled a heretic, I believe geniuine Biblical Christianity is far more Libertarian than Republican. (I've been a Republican for most of my adult life, but that means little now. I haven't "gone liberal"...I've gone Biblical.
Moses never addressed the Ten Commandments to the surrounding pagan nations. They were rules of behavior for those who named the name of Jehovah.
In the New Testament, this principle still holds. We Christians were never called to win the cultural war. We were never even told to be in it. This is so obvious from the most cursory reading of Jesus' instructions. We have sold the Gospel out to advance our Kingdom on Earth, which has produced neither the Kingdom we imagined, nor rescued many out of the Kingdom of Darkness.
America is Mystery Babylon. Make no mistake about it. There are nearly 1,000 SPECIFIC Biblical evidences to prove this; there is no way one can twist Scripture to conclude otherwise. Contrary to our self-delusion, America was NEVER a Christian nation. I realize I've committed blasphemy with NeoCons for even suggesting this, but this is one thing Mr. Obama got right...he may have even understated the case by qualifying it with "no longer." The fact is, it never was.
Why does this matter? Because it shows that we have dissipated our energies on a mission we were never called to do...."fix" Babylon. Daniel didn't try to in the Old Testament, and we aren't called to do this now. Christian moral conduct applies only to....you guessed it...Christians! Not only is attempting to impose Christian morals on Babylon ineffective....it's not even remotely Biblical.
People sin because they're in spiritual darkness. Imposing our morals on fallen man is putting a gold ring in the snout of a pig. We do no favors to the lost by attempting to do this.
The good news is Jesus came to call sinners. We're STILL in the age of grace...though it is coming quickly to a close. Our mandate is to rescue as many out of spiritual darkness as possible, before destruction comes...which is inevitable.
For a number of months, I was really annoyed at this North Pole cop who would park right down the street from me, just daring me to slide through a stop sign on an icy road in the middle of winter. I'm generally a law abiding citizen....but something really bothered me about this one cop's presence. Finally God slapped me upside the head.
"What really bothers you about that cop," God asked.
After some thought, I came up with an anwer. "Because I don't live in North Pole. He's out of his jurisdiction."
God said, "Bingo!" Now do you realize why the lost RESENT your political efforts? You're out of their jurisdiction! Get them into YOUR kingdom and THEN you can expect some Christian moral behavior of them. You can't CLEAN a fish till you catch it."
It was an amazing revelation. I realized that the truth of the Gospel is in no means diluted...God's moral standards are just as high as they ever were. But Man is utterly incapable of living up to them UNTIL they are citizens of the Kingdom of Light.
Being an artist, musician, and writer, I have a lot of homosexual friends of both polarities. For a long time I wondered how I could maintain my Christian standards and still not alienate these fine folks who have helped advance my career and enrich my life in many ways. The most loving thing I can do is invite them into Jesus' Kingdom....and let Him fix whatever needs fixing.
I regret to say that our unbiblical "cultural war" has been the most hateful thing we could have ever participated in. For those of you who are gleaning the table scraps, may I offer a sincere apology for our very very wrong representation of the Gospel. Jesus loves you very much. He'll take you just as you are, but he won't LEAVE you as you are.
That is the REAL Gospel.
