I'm officially official now! After several years of pining on the back porch of Red Room, I am now officially an author, whereas before I was, presumably, an unauthorized author. Or perhaps an authorized non-author. Or something. What does this all mean?
While we ponder this matter, allow me to extrapolate this development to the larger issues of life. One of the perks of being an author, authorized or not, is that one gets to blather on about "the big picture" under the delusion that everything that sloshes out of the inkwell is of life and death import. Well, it IS!
No matter what one endeavors to accomplish in life, one will encounter gategeepers of one sort or another, the Knights who say'Ni!' as it were. There is an entire clsss of people on the planet whose entire job it is to deny other people their rightful success. In the writer business, the Knights who say Ni! are publishers and agents, of course. Most of us writers spend our lives looking around for a shrubbery to appease the Knights who say Ni! only to find that after we've obtained the shrubbery the Knights who say Ni! have decided they want something else. What's worse, even after we somehow appease the Knights who say Ni, we learn that the path they guard doesn't even lead to where we want to go in the firsst place.
Which leads us to the unofficial path. Most of the really great accomplishments in nearly every field were done in a very unofficial manner. As the saying goes: Professionals built the Titanic: Amateurs built the Ark. In the publishing businiess, countless writers are bypassing the Knights who say Ni entirely, opting for the ever-growing option of E-book publication and the like. We have had to adjust our own goals to some extent. If the traditional goal of seeing a lot of dead trees soaked with our ink, the Knights who say Ni are still in charge. If our goal is simply having something to say, and having someone to listen, the Knights who say Ni are becoming ever more irrelevant.
Anyway.....more to follow on this thread of thought. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy my fifteen minutes of officialdom.
