Looking for a great read about great reads? Check out The Browser Best of FiveBooks 2011 for such pleasures as the five books that have inspired Woody Allen, the five books that influenced the lit crit Harold Bloom, Paul Krugman’s recommendations of five books “On Inspiration for a Liberal Economist,” Fran Lebowitz on five New York writers, and Erica Jong’s “Unmissable books on Women, Feminism, and Life.”
To quote from the intro to the collection, The Browser is a “transatlantic website featuring a mix of curated and original content, aimed at the intelligent general reader.” Subjects covered include politics, economics, sports, science, and arts and culture. Among The Browser’s original content is the FiveBooks interview series, in which experts talk about “the five books in their area of interest that have most inspired their work, informed their thinking or that they would most recommend to others.”
I’m told that The Browser’s team of interviewers has done more than 600 such interviews, generating hundreds of book recommendations, and you can see the full list at thebrowswer.com/fivebooks/archive. The Best of FiveBooks 2011 includes 52 of The Browser staff favorites.
Whenever I visit the home or office of someone who likes books or collects them or studies them, or maybe even writes them now and then, I’m always drawn to the bookshelves. I want to see what my host is reading or has read or plans to read, because maybe there’s a book there I’d like to read, too. The Best of FiveBooks 2011 is like getting to peruse 52 libraries, and I’m delighted to say a sampling of my own library is in the collection. Late last year I did an interview with The Browser’s Sophie Roell about my favorite five books about writing, and that interview is included in the collection. Those five books, by the way, are Ron Carlson Writes a Story by Ron Carlson, Stephen King on Writing, The Faith of a Writer by Joyce Carol Oates, The Courage to Write by Ralph Keyes, and The Eleventh Draft, edited by Frank Conroy.
