The city of Florence in Tuscany,during the Quattrocento was the hub of Renaissance,Italy.Here,under the Medici,saw a revival of Greek studies and Roman antiquity.Translations of Plato and other Greek writers became popular.The revolution in learning had begun in earnest.
A notable Renaissance man was Michelangelo Buonarroti[1475-1564],whose magnificent Moses and David and his frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel have made him famous for centuries.Other Renaissance masters were the versatile Leonardo da Vinci[1452-1519],Lorenzo Ghiberti[c 1381-1455],Filippo Brunelleschi[1377-1446] and Donatello[1386-1466],among others.
Well, it won't be the first time that America would have been touched by the fires of renaissance.The Harlem Renaissance,with its crop of writers, springs readily to mind.It grew out of an urge, in the 1920's,for black writers to express themselves more freely in their own unique way.Thus, a new generation of writers was born which included, among others Langston Hughes,Wallace Thurman and Zora Neale Hurston.The Apollo Theatre became a regular venue.
The other movement worthy of mention here was the Chicago Renaissance[1910-1920's],which saw the emergence of Dreiser,Carl Sandburg,Harriet Monroe et.al.
It yet remains just how this new play will unfold-what form and shape will be fashioned by this new scenario that involves a writer/president who has been handed a clear mandate and a script that is'' tabula rasa.''Will this new movement cut through all divides and even impact upon the slums of America?Will it be able to give hope to the hopeless and inspire a nation,even a world?
