''Enter the Dragon''.No,it's not a remake of Bruce Lee's classic kung fu movie. That was before the advent of icons like Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Today's episode deals more with the Beijing Games-the sequel,or just Beijing II,if you prefer.
Right after China bagged the most gold medals at the Olympics, the state expeditiously kicks off the sequel with considerably less fanfare than the precursor games.Their most senior economic official Premier Wen Jiabao gets to blow the trumpet with an announcement of China's ''biggest contribution to the world'' in reference to a massive stimulus package reputedly worth a whopping 4 trillion yuan[586 billion]
And the timing? One week before leaders of 20 of the world's major economies meet in Washington to parlay about the global financial crisis. The Chinese Premier says that the money is to boost investment and consumer spending .He does not say ,however,if he included the reconstruction sum after China's devastating earthquake in May,or the costs of other projects already in the pipeline.
And anyway, since when is China so concerned with the welfare of the world?Or is it that some countries, not excluding India ,China and the EU,are just waiting for this so-called new world order where they can flex their bulging biceps at the world.
Postscript. This G20 meeting should have been rescheduled so that President Barack Obama would have been able to participate meaningfully in the deliberations.
