I've had a concept rattling around in my head for a while now.. a series set in a slightly more paranormal version of New Orleans. Not a vampire-and-werewolf-and-zombie thing, but something with a little more poppets-with-pins-stuck-in.
To this end, I've been reading up on New Orleans history. The city goes pretty far back and some interesting things have happened there, it's definitely climbing up my "places to see before I die" list (and it's not all that far from Austin).
I've also been reading up on Voudoun. It's pretty interesting, actually, and the offshoots are also fascinating. It's a different approach to things, that's for sure! Despite having co-workers drop by during lunch as I study up, nobody has tried spraying me with holy water or asking if I can curse the boss (heh).
This series would actually have a HEROINE instead of a hero. Normally I write from the heros perspective since I find it easier to put myself in the place of a male character, but I think it's worth the attempt.. if nothing else it'll be a learning experience (that's what I call "abject failure" nowadays).
So I'm making notes, thinking of situations, and doing my best to avoid any horror/occult story cliches. And probably seriously worrying my co-workers.. at least when I bring the dolls into the office!
