Well, I really ought to post here more, sigh. My pages here launguish from neglect, even as I scribble away in the small secret cave I now occupy.. oh yeah more on that, I suppose.
The property owner whee I live decided to turn the house I lived in, into a short-term vaction/event rental. And since it's South by Southwest time, I had to vacate forthwth. Needless to say the housing market here is soft right now, so I've ende up packed into a extended-stay residence inn near the office.
I sold almost everything I own.. guitars, bass, music gear, clothes, toys, etc. etc. - all sold or donated to local charities. I'm down to 3 computers, 2 field recorders, and my clothes and daily needs equipment. Everything fits in my rolling duffel bag and my backpack, amazingly enough.
It's not quite the unmitigated disaster that it could be, though. It's a cheap cab ride from the office, it's very close to a bus stop, and there's a strip mall full of fun places (food, emergency medical care, certified massage therapy, corner store) so I don't have to walk too far at all when I need something. The efficiency is small but complete: full-sized fridge, microwave, 2 burner electric stove top, flat panel TV with cable, and a nice full-sized bed, along with a neat desk that hold my main laptop. Everything is right at hand.. which brings me to "yet another thing".
While out shipping a laptop I don't use to a friend in need, I slipped getting off the bus and slammed my left foot (yes, the same one with the toes off) into the ground HARD. No pain of course, but no broken skin, so I dismissed it as a "minor oww" and got on with life. "Unhappily the next morning at 4:00 AM it was massively swollen, and after a trip to the E.R. it appears that I had managed to break a bone. Very not fun and horrible timing as I had to move that week!
Long story short: surgery in a week or two to fuse the broken bone to a good one, followed by six weeks of limping around in the same medical boot I'm in now. Oh joy, oh rapture. In theory it's a less invasive process than the amputation, so I should be in and out of surgery in the same day. Still.. feh.
The bottom line is that I'm going to stay at the residence inn until the foot has mostly healed, THEN look for a more permanent arrangement. In the meantime, I've been focusing on learning and improving my writing.. and just this weekend cranked out a flash fiction story (which I should post here). I also thing I can revive my novel-in-eternal-progress "Dead Ringer", given what I've read about self-editing and rewriting recently.
Other than that, everything is fine (said with some amount of sarcasm). At least the serious lack of distractions helps me focus on writing, especially since the bus to the plae stops running at 10:30PM weekdays and earlier on weekends, thus keeping me from going out.
More as it happens!
