Well, certainly, this isn't something I worry too much about right now, until I have something (even a short story) that I feel is publishable, but I do spend time on it on occasion.
Most of my thinking for novella and novel length works focus on self-publishing: either Kindle format, or for tne Nook. Trying to get a novella/novel placed with a briack-and-mortar publisher when you're an unknown and untried writer is like playing the Lotto - you're going to lose most of the time. And given the expense of producing a dead-trees product, and the high percentage chance you won't sell enough to recoup costs, well.. it's actually no surprise.
For short-form fiction, I'm seeing more and more successful eZines. Not just for weird fiction, but mystery and science fiction, which is very heartening. This is my first line of attack, to try to sel a few short stories into eZines. It's not a lot of money but it IS a publishing credit and pizza money, so it's not to be sneered at.
The only thing holding me back is getting enough material written to start collecting rejection slips (heh) and saving up money to do my own marketing. Most eZines have a tiny marketing budget so I want to be able to engage in some shameless self-promotion when the time comes.
Also, based on some ideas I've seen in my bazillion books on the craft of writing, I'm going to resurrrect "Dead Ringer" and turn it into a serial. There's 28000 words of pretty decent writing that I think I can save from the "permanent archives" and forge into something entertaining. I hate to think of all that hard work, sweat, tears, and cursing in German (one of my favorite things) going to waste, languising hopelessly in the dark corners of an externl USB drive. Sad.
Apropos of nothing, I had a deent 4 day weekend over the Fourth of July holiday. I didn]t really go out, just sat around and vegetated. Work stress has been a serious issue the past month and I'm glad to have had a break - now I feel confident I can dive back into the fray without blowing a gasket. I really need to plan/save for real vacations more often, I think twice a year visits to places I want to explore (1 week each) would be perfect. I can go places I want to write about - extra bonus!
Anyway, I'm hoping to wrap up Enshadowed in about 2 months, and concurrently start sawing up "Dead Ringer" into episodes. "The Vicky Chronicles" needs to be cleaned up as ar as it's gone and I need to start posting episodes here and on my Website (mostly here). My alternate New Orleans series is still in research mode, I've read a lot on city history, gotten several chapters into the book on Hatian Voudoun, and gotten a book on New Orleans Voudoun so I just need to sit down and READ.
Until next time, scriven away!
