Ive read a fair amount on this topic, because I'd like people to read my works (even the free stuff) but I don't want to come across as desperate, obnoxious, or worse!
Currently I have my blog here, and I've been gently routing friends and others here via links in my signature block when I post in various other forums. This gets some nice traffic here, and occasionally to my Blogger blogs. But how to break out beyond friends ans acquaintances?
I've seen how some people recommending commenting on books on Amazon and then making sure you have a link to yur main site in yuor comment. Ok, as long as you're posting a meaningful review or commentary, gret.. but this one person recommends posting even if you haven't read the story! Sorry, that's just lame. Read the darn thing or go home!
I've considere paid ads in online magazines. This isn't too outrageous, given the comparative cost of print ads, but I'm oncinvinced that this is a cost effective approach unless you have a lot of writing arond to hold new visitors brought in this way.
The best way, of course, is to get something published. Even a story in an eZine will get you more exposure than an ad, and you even get paid for the story most times. Getting in the door, of course.. that's a different matter. At one time eZines were a pretty easy market, now many are top-notch publictions with high editorial standards thank heavens).
I'm fairly happy with the occasional 200+ page view days, at least for now. Eventually I'll either have to declare this a hobby and simply piddle around, or fine a way to clear my deck and hit the gas.
