Despite the (frequent) entertainment value, IMHO one of the more disheartening aspects of the current political environment is the apparent complete inability of the American public to recognize --let alone roll-on-the-floor laugh at-- what rhetoricians term "Straw Man Arguments." (To maintain strict gender-equality, Brits call these "Aunt Sally" debate points).
In a classic "Straw Man," one presents an Apocalyptical outcome (select at least one: "return of the Black Death-plague," "halitosis," "frequent & uncontrollable urination" or "erections that last four or more hours") if one's opponent fails to surrender to the politicized position presented.
We once chuckled at this tactic, whether we supported the presenter's position or not.
Now we quote them, in all seriousness, in our Facebook (and other public venue) postings.
Feel free to disagree with my assessment.
If, that is, you really want to see that 24/7 Honey Boo-Boo Marathon broadcast on every channel.
