Benjamin Whichcote said, "The human soul is to God as a flower is to the sun; it opens at its approach; it shuts when it withdraws."
Today, I will approach the sun; I will open to all that is divine. And, the approach? Well, it's just that - a simple acknowledgement...a thought...a desire...a tiny inclination. It's like magic really. No effort.
Jesus said, "Look at the flowers of the field...they neither toil nor spin...and yet...and yet...your Heavenly Father sees them..."
No flower ever struggled to open to the sun. It simply turns and looks...then, shares its color and fragrance with the world. How beautiful. I think I'll do the same. Why make knowing God into a struggle? Why let the religion I was raised to believe tell me there are things I must DO in order to be? Think I'll lay that down for now and do nothing. Just be. Everything, that is. What freedom there is in being who I am...a beautiful human flower opening to the sun.
Ah, today, that's it for me. I will just remember something Thomas Merton once whispered: "As soon as a person--that's me...you, too--As soon as a person is inclined to be with God--as I am and you are--Just as soon as a person is inclined to be with God, they ARE...no matter where they are."
"Furthermore," he whispered still, "When it would seem as if they're just in the middle of their journey to God"--and, for me, that's like, most of the time...maybe for you, too--"know this: know that you have actually arrived at your destination already."
Already? You mean, I'm there? Just the thought...the feeling for God...and...and, I bloom?
Wow! What a Divine thought! Thank you Thomas. How could I not thank you? Whisper still, my friend. And, often, this day. I'll be listening for your reminders speaking.
Will you? Yes, you, who is reading this. Can you lay aside the need to write...to check who's read what you've labored over? Can you just stop doing long enough to be? I have to remind myself of this often...driven as I am to produce...to impress...to be read and admired.
Try doing nothing today. Just being. Listen for the divine reminders that the sun is shining and you, my friend, are blossoming into Life itself. You are the beautiful colors of this world, the fragrance that makes all things better.
